About Me

by Mario Mamalis August 24, 2018

Professional Journey

My career in software engineering spans more than two decades, with experience across software architecture, application modernization, team leadership, and enterprise technology delivery. I began my journey at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, where I designed and developed internal and external software systems, including an e-commerce module for online exam registrations. I later advanced through roles at AIM Specialty Health and Morgan Stanley, where I continued to deepen my expertise in .NET development, enterprise application design, and modernization of business-critical systems.

As my career progressed, I moved into leadership roles with organizations such as Breakthrough Technologies, Answers Media, and iDevConcepts Inc. In these positions, I led development teams, architected custom software solutions, and helped establish strong engineering practices. Whether delivering a health and wellness platform or designing Business Intelligence dashboard solutions, my focus remained consistent, building reliable, scalable, and user-centered software that solved meaningful business problems.

My role as Director of Software Development at NaviTread LLC marked an important stage in my professional growth. There, I helped define the technical strategy for a startup environment and led the development of innovative solutions, including a scheduling optimization system for healthcare workers and a medical transcription platform leveraging Azure Cognitive Services. This role also strengthened my commitment to mentoring, as I guided a near-shore engineering team through the delivery of complex, modern software solutions.

Later, as Portfolio Manager at Capgemini and Senior Director of Software Engineering at Stokastic.com, I led the design and delivery of enterprise-grade software platforms and modern architecture frameworks. At Capgemini, I helped guide large teams of architects and developers through a multi-year, multi-million-dollar modernization initiative. At Stokastic, I architected and delivered a complex data collection and visualization platform for the sports betting industry, combining technical strategy, product thinking, and hands-on engineering leadership.

At Xebia | Xpirit, I served as an App Modernization Consultant and Software Architect, helping organizations evaluate their current systems, define modernization strategies, and adopt stronger software development practices. My work included assessing customer needs, recommending modernization approaches, and architecting microservice-based solutions designed to support long-term scalability and business value. I also contributed to blogs, vlogs, and community engagement, reflecting my ongoing commitment to sharing knowledge with the broader technology community.

Today, as Senior Director of Application Development at UTurn Data Solutions, I lead the software development practice and help define the vision, delivery model, and technical strategy for legacy modernization initiatives. My work focuses on architecting modern software solutions that leverage cloud technologies, AI, and proven engineering practices to improve efficiency, accelerate delivery, and create measurable business value. I also build and lead lean, high-performing engineering teams centered on quality, accountability, and scalable execution. By partnering closely with executives, clients, and cross-functional teams, I help align technology strategy with business goals and modernization priorities.

In summary, my professional journey reflects a blend of deep technical expertise, strategic leadership, and a passion for solving complex business problems through software. I bring a practical, end-to-end perspective to technology delivery, from architecture and modernization strategy to team leadership, execution, and knowledge sharing. As the industry continues to evolve, I remain focused on helping organizations modernize with purpose, build stronger engineering teams, and deliver software that creates lasting business impact.

Personal Interests

Outside of work, I enjoy sports, cars, travel, and scientific exploration. My wife and son are central to my life, and their support, encouragement, and inspiration continue to shape both my personal and professional journey.

Football, or soccer as it is known in the United States, is without question my favorite sport. I still enjoy playing competitively with friends, and there is something special about those ninety minutes on the field, when the world seems to fade away and the only thing that matters is the game. I also enjoy tennis and go-kart racing, both of which satisfy my love for competition, movement, and focus.

Cars have always had a special place in my heart. To me, they are more than machines. They have character, personality, and presence. My C63s AMG is my pride and joy, whether I am enjoying a spirited drive with rock music playing or simply admiring it over coffee with friends. Given the space and resources, I would happily build a collection of cars, each with its own story and spirit.

Travel is another passion I pursue whenever possible, especially with family and friends. Experiencing new places, meeting different people, exploring diverse cultures, and enjoying local food all offer a broader perspective on life. Travel reminds me both how different we are and how much we share as people.

I have also always been fascinated by the cosmos. Cosmology and astrophysics fill me with awe, curiosity, and humility. Looking at the stars reminds me how much we still have to discover about our origins, our universe, and our place within it. I eagerly follow scientific progress that brings us closer to understanding the deeper structure of reality. In my view, unlocking the mysteries of the universe would be one of the greatest achievements of any intelligent civilization.
